NASHVILLE -- In need of some experienced goaltending help, the Coyotes on Thursday claimed netminder Calvin Pickard off waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers.

Starter Antti Raanta and backup Darcy Kuemper both are nursing lower-body injuries and are considered day-to-day. However, neither was able to dress for Thursday's game at Nashville so American Hockey Leaguers Adin Hill and Hunter Miska were inserted into the lineup as starter and backup, respectively.

Pickard has produced a 32-46-9 record, a 2.89 goals-against average, and a .909 save percentage in 98 NHL games with Colorado, Toronto and Philadelphia. In 11 games with the Flyers this season, Pickard notched a 4.01 GAA and a .863 save percentage.

"Right now, he's struggled to find his game on a consistent level, but he's shown the ability to play well," Coyotes General Manager John Chayka told reporters during a conference call on Thursday. "We have a short-term need here and he'll get some opportunity, then we'll just take it day by day from there ... We need a goalie and he's a good goalie. It's never a bad thing to have too many good goalies."

Pickard was expected to join the Coyotes in Nashville before Thursday's game and then fly back to Arizona with the team on Friday. He could make his Coyotes debut, either as a starter or backup, as early as Saturday vs. St. Louis in Glendale.

Coyotes fans may remember when Pickard, playing for Philadelphia, started against Arizona twice within a four-day span earlier this month.

"We've watched him for a couple years," Chayka said. "We think there's something there, something more there. Hopefully he can come to Arizona and find his game."

Chayka said claiming Pickard would ultimately allow Hill and Miska the opportunity to gain more pro experience by playing in the AHL.

"They're both young goalies that we think highly of in the long-term, but they've got to play more pro games to really get to where they want to get to," Chayka said. "We're not going to rush anybody and we're not putting anyone in a tough spot."

Pickard will wear sweater No. 30 with the Coyotes.
